Asbestos discovered in several areas of the Central Elementary School, Cranbury Road, and Lawrence Brook Elementary School during the district's ongoing additions and renovations project . The officials said that it would be removed at times when school is not in session.

Central school is 56 years old. It's actually the oldest school of East Brunswick. So this was not an unexpected news as asbestos was commonly used material to insulate ceilings and plumbing pipes in the 1950s and '60s.

Patricia LaDuca, the coordinator of community relations and programs for the district, said that experts in asbestos removal are cleaning up the malignant substance at different times when there are no students in the school.

The district is dealing with a problem in coordinating the asbestos clean up with the work being done by the general contractor. As per a recently approved change order, the general contractor can work directly with the asbestos abatement company so that the possible time struggle could be avoided.

"Rather than contract with the asbestos abatement ourselves, we do it through the general contractor. We don't want one contractor to hold us up. Now it becomes the general contractor's responsibility," said Bernardo Giuliana, Business Administrator of the school.

He said that much of the asbestos has been remove already at Central. "Abatement was done in one section during winter break, and in another during the weekend before Martin Luther King Day," he said.

Both friable and nonfriable types of asbestos had been discovered in the school. The friable material, which was found while removing pipe insulation at Central, was removed little by little with hand. Nonfriable substance was discovered mainly in floor tiles.

"The work is highly regulated by the federal OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and is also guided by state regulations with totally experienced contractors and professionals," LaDuca said.

When a new part of Central School opens up, pupils from an old portion move in to new section which enabled the workers to work out in the just vacated part.
